Bacon Retires after More Than Seven Years As Chair

The decision to retire on March 31, 2022, was not an easy one. Over the past seven and a half years, my life has intertwined with every member of the department and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Being a department chair was a lifelong career dream, and everyone made my time very special. Together we have built a strong academic department. Everyone bought into the vision I articulated and made it a reality. It is an achievement we will never forget.

Prem Assumes Role of Interim Chair

As spring approaches, the winds of change are blowing through our department as well. The past four months have been tumultuous in a number of ways. While we have had several faculty members depart due to a variety of reasons, the loss of senior departmental leadership has been particularly impactful as well as largely unexpected.

In Memoriam

The department lost two of our wonderful colleagues this January. Please read their obituaries and comments from all of us. Dr. Kirk Reid and Heather Taylor will both be truly missed!

Physician Musician

One of the first things Maxwell Dillon Bolden ever heard in his life was the sound of his mother’s singing. One of the next things he heard was the sound of his mother’s smart watch. For so many milestones that mark the life of Dr. LaToya Mason-Bolden, music has formed the backdrop; and so, as she rocked her newborn son and watched her 2-year-old daughter Ari-Elle Grace play with her doll, she hummed a familiar hymn; she was at peace. Until the alarm went off.

2022-2023 Anesthesiology Residency and Fellowship Matches

We are thrilled to have successfully matched eight incoming PGY-1 interns, two PGY-2/CA-1s, and fellows for the pain and cardiac fellowships. They will all be starting in our department in July!

Where are they now?

The Department of Anesthesiology has always had such wonderful people who have contributed to make it what it is today. We would like to know what some of our colleagues and friends who have moved on are doing now and how UMMC has played a role in their careers and lives.
